Can You Pop Microwave Popcorn on The Stove

Q: My microwave recently died, and right now, I am in no shape to go and get a new one. I have a hankering for popcorn, is it possible to pop microwave popcorn on the stove?

popcorn on the stove

A: Yes! Believe it or not, it is very easy to make microwave popcorn on a stove top, and takes about as long as it would in the microwave.

You will need a 2-quart pot with a lid and preferably a handle so that way you can shake it. The lid should be able to let steam out. Otherwise, you’ll have to tip it some, and risk popcorn kernels flying all over your kitchen.

The Method

When we say method, we really mean it. Start with a room temperature pot, and cut open the popcorn bag. Be sure to squeeze out all of the butter and seasonings they added for the best flavor. If you have dry kernels, you’ll need to add about a tablespoon of vegetable or canola oil. Butter can be added at the end.

Place the pot on the burner and turn on medium-high heat. Cover, and shake the kernel every 15 seconds to prevent burning.

Popping will begin within 30-45 seconds. You need to work with your nose to tell when your popcorn is done, as some kernels, will not pop no matter how long they have been heated.

Remove from heat and carefully remove the lid. Pour into a bowl and season with extra butter or flavorings and enjoy.

Microwave popcorn done on the stove is a fun way to add a more formal feel to movie night, and it is fun for kids to watch as the kernels begin to pop.

Thank You, old microwave died, not sure if replacing it. Had one of those old pasta pots with a strainer lid from my mother, it works GREAT!!!! No need for an expensive stove top popper now. Every kernel popped in the flavor I wanted, though scraping the flavoring from the bag could be messy without a rubber spatula. Thank you for the info.
