Q: I love seafood, but I never take any of my leftovers home because I don’t know how to reheat crab legs. Recently my granddaughter told me about how she just microwaves her King crab legs in the microwave whenever she wants them. Is that safe? Can you microwave crab legs?
A: King crab that you buy frozen has already been cooked either on the boat or shortly after docking then blast frozen to preserve freshness. Therefore, all you have to do is warm it up!
To microwave crab legs, you’ll want to put them in a microwave safe dish big enough to hold them. Most people use a glass casserole dish that will fit in their microwave. Add one tablespoon of water per 8 Oz of crab legs. Then, simply microwave for 3-4 minutes per 8 Oz of crab legs.
You’ll know when they are warmed through either by touching the meaty part or once you can smell them.
Crab legs and shellfish, in general, have always been somewhat hard to reheat if you don’t know there are tricks to doing it. While every microwave is different, these tips will generally ensure that your food is as good as the first night. Just be aware that if you overcook, or do not add enough water, you will run the chance of getting rubbery meat, which is never a pleasant meal!
